Meliá Hotels International has announced plans to transform the Meliá de Mar hotel in Illetas, Spain, into a premium Gran Meliá hotel.

The €3m project is part of the company’s effort to expand its portfolio in Spain, and follows a recently announced plan to upgrade Madrid’s Gran Melia Palacio de los Duques hotel.

Meliá Hotels International CEO and vice-chairman Gabriel Escarrer said: "A landmark hotel such as the Gran Melia de Mar will help us strengthen our brand awareness and differentiate the destination in the premium category in an increasingly competitive environment."

Located near Palma, the Meliá de Mar hotel was fully refurbished in 2008, and transformed into an adults-only hotel in 2009 to improve its value and exclusivity for guests.

Meliá Hotels plans to rebrand the Meliá de Mar hotel as the Gran Meliá de Mar upon completion of the transformation, which will improve the quality of rooms and outdoor facilities for the 2016 summer season.

The transformation plans include a new pool area, lounge, and terraces.

The hotel will improve its two restaurants with a cocktail service, and add a total of six function rooms for meetings and events.
