Australian-based Tef Hotels has transformed the HM Prison Pentridge in Melbourne, Australia, into a billion-dollar luxury hotel – the Adina Apartment Hotel Pentridge Melbourne.
This redevelopment of the 170-year-old property is one of Australia’s major bluestone restoration projects and one of the 40 prison-hotel conversions globally.
The Adina Apartment Hotel Pentridge Melbourne features 106 guest rooms, an Olivine wine bar, the eight Chapter Place event venues and the urban retreat, The Interlude.
The Interlude is the redevelopment project’s major highlight and is claimed to be the world’s first experience-led urban wellness retreat in a converted prison.
The Interlude features 19 heritage suites, each created from four to five original cells. Each suite has original cell doors, vaulted brick ceilings and bluestone walls.
Guests can access the underground candlelit relaxing pool at The Interlude, which required three months of digging and removal of 250 tonnes of rock by conveyor belt, reported Times of India.

Tef Hotels general manager Jesse Kornoff said: “We’ve had people coming in and staying because they’re genuinely interested in seeing what’s been hiding behind the bluestone walls; others were part of conferences or held events in our unique event spaces and others still were simply attracted to the sheer convenience of our brand-new hotel being located half-way between Melbourne’s CBD and the airport.
“So, the developer’s billion-dollar investment in developing the Pentridge lifestyle development certainly bodes well for its future.”
