Marriott International continues to expand its Protea Hotels by Marriott portfolio with the signing of five deals in Africa.

The deal was signed at the Africa Hospitality Investment Forum event in Nairobi.

The new projects are Protea Hotel by Marriott Serowe, Botswana; Protea Hotel by Marriott Bahir Dar, Ethiopia; Protea Hotel by Marriott Zanzibar Stone Town, Tanzania; Protea Hotel by Marriott Abuja Jahi, Nigeria and Protea Hotel by Marriott Delta, Nigeria.

Karim Cheltout, Marriott International regional vice-president of development – Africa and All-Inclusive EMEA, said: “Protea Hotels by Marriott has a long-established legacy in Africa and we are excited to further strengthen the brand’s footprint in the continent with these five signings.”

Marriott intends to increase its footprint in Botswana with the opening of Protea Hotel by Marriott Serowe, in partnership with Letsatsi Partners in 2026. It will comprise 155 guestrooms and suites.

Protea Hotels by Marriott will make its Ethiopian debut with the rebranding of Blue Nile Resort to Protea Hotel by Marriott Bahir Dar. Following an extensive restoration, the rebranding is expected to be finished by 2025. The hotel will feature 127 rooms and suites.

Furthermore, Marriott International has agreed to convert Parklane Holdings Zanzibar’s existing property into the Protea Hotel by Marriott Zanzibar Stone Town, with the 26-room hotel scheduled to open at the end of this year.

The Protea Hotel by Marriott Abuja Jahi is anticipated to open in Nigeria in 2027. It will boast 144 guest rooms, two food and beverage outlets, a pool and a meeting space.

Marriott International has also agreed to renovate Dutch Gate Hotel and Suites’ current property into Protea Hotel by Marriott Delta. This hotel is expected to open next year and will include 108 rooms, four food and beverage outlets, a meeting space, a fitness centre and a swimming pool.

With over 60 hotels and over 6,500 rooms in operation in nine countries, Protea Hotels by Marriott comprise over 40% of Marriott International’s African portfolio.
