The Aids Healthcare Foundation (AHF) and its housing advocacy division, Housing Is A Human Right (HHR) have expressed concern about Los Angeles’s planned purchase of the Mayfair Hotel for its Inside Safe interim housing programme.
The Los Angeles Council’s Inside Safe program aims to take people out of homeless encampments and place them in hotels while they look for long-term housing.
The Los Angeles Times estimates the Mayfair hotel to cost approximately $83m after renovations – an estimated $282,000 per unit.
AHF states that this is “extremely costly” for temporary interim housing, as $83m is approximately one third of the current Inside Safe budget of $250m.
The organisation calls on the Los Angeles Council to “explore other options where $282,000 could be used for permanent housing for the unhoused community, including utilising adaptive reuse of existing buildings.”
AHF points out several residential hotels, such as the Cecil and the Clark hotel, which reportedly remain completely or partially vacant and could serve as permanent housing for a fraction of the cost of buying and renovating the Mayfair hotel.
