IHG Hotels & Resorts has signed an agreement with AXA IM Alts to launch a new Holiday Inn property in Kyoto, Japan.
The 183-room hotel will undergo a revamp after reopening as Holiday Inn Kyoto Gojo in early 2025.
Holiday Inn Kyoto Gojo is situated between Kyoto’s main station and downtown cultural sites.
This property will feature enhanced dining and leisure amenities, including a lobby lounge and café bar, an upmarket restaurant, banquet rooms, traditional Japanese baths, and a gym.
The renovation will focus on sustainable improvements, such as energy-saving showers and guest room management systems, aiming for BELS [(Building-Housing Energy-efficiency Labeling System] certification.
IHG Hotels & Resorts Japan & Micronesia managing director and IHG-ANA Hotels Group Japan GK CEO Abhijay Sandilya said: “We are very pleased to announce our agreement with AXA IM Alts to open Holiday Inn Kyoto Gojo by early 2025, marking the return of the brand to its roots in Kyoto where it was first launched back in 1973.

By GlobalData“The historical, cultural and beautiful Kyoto is one of the world’s favourite destinations, so we are confident that Holiday Inn, as the world’s largest hotel brand family, along with IHG’s other Kyoto hotels, ANA Crowne Plaza Kyoto and Six Senses Kyoto, will provide a place for everyone to stay when visiting this unique and wonderful city.
“We look forward to building on this long-standing partnership with AXA IM Alts and hope to develop even more great hotels throughout Japan in the years to come.”
The new hotel signifies the brand’s historic return to Kyoto, where the first Holiday Inn opened in 1973.
Holiday Inn Kyoto Gojo will be the 11th Holiday Inn in Japan and IHG’s third hotel in Kyoto, joining ANA Crowne Plaza Kyoto and Six Senses Kyoto.
IHG continues to expand in Japan, with 59 hotels currently open or in the pipeline.
