Vacation ownership and travel experiences company Hilton Grand Vacations (HGV) has acquired Citadines Kyoto Karasuma Gojo in Kyoto, Japan.

This marks the company’s first foray into the city of Kyoto and its third property in Japan.

It is part of HGV’s strategy to expand its presence in Japan, where it has experienced member growth since 2012, with membership numbers now exceeding 72,000.

The financial details of the transaction, brokered by JLL, have not been disclosed.

HGV has announced plans to transform the acquired property into a timeshare resort featuring 63 one-bedroom units, each with a kitchen.

Among the other planned amenities for the resort is a fitness centre.

The renovation of the property is scheduled to commence in the second quarter of 2025, with an anticipated completion in the first quarter of 2026.

Sales for the timeshare units are expected to begin concurrently with the start of the renovation process.

Citadines Kyoto Karasuma Gojo is situated within walking distance of restaurants, shopping, entertainment, and historic landmarks.

Hilton Grand Vacations CEO Mark Wang said: “Building on our history as the leading vacation ownership company in Japan, we’re thrilled to expand our portfolio to offer even more vacation experiences to our members.

“Kyoto is a world-famous cultural destination for travellers, filled with history, heritage and elegance, and we’re excited to engage with new members and guests seeking cultural immersion.”

The company’s inaugural Japanese property, The Bay Forest Odawara, a Hilton Club, was introduced in 2018.

HGV’s most recent property in Japan, The Beach Resort Sesoko, a Hilton Club, opened its doors in October 2021.

In April 2024, HGV members in a partnership with Great Wolf Lodge gained the option to exchange club points for stays at Great Wolf Lodge locations throughout the US.
