Hotel operator Accor has secured Sustainable Tourism Certification for its 100th hotel in Australia.

Awarded by Ecotourism Australia, the latest certification marks a step ahead toward attaining Accor’s larger vision to certify its entire Pacific network by the end of 2025.

Of the 100 certified hotels, 30% are positioned in the central business districts of Sydney and Melbourne.

According to Accor, all these properties showcase commitment to environmental, socio-economic, cultural, and responsible management principles.

They also comply with global sustainable tourism standards to receive the certification.

Accor Pacific PM&E [premium, midscale and economy] chief operating officer Adrian Williams said: “Just over a year after announcing our partnership with Ecotourism Australia, we have proudly reached the significant milestone of 100 Sustainable Tourism Certified hotels across the country, with Novotel Sydney City Centre being the landmark 100th certification.

“Sustainable Tourism Certification not only enhances the competitiveness and attractiveness of our hotels but also boosts operational excellence and revenue generation. This achievement aligns perfectly with the expectations of today’s travellers and our corporate clients, who increasingly seek responsible options and prefer hotels with third-party sustainable certifications. We will continue to strive for excellence in sustainability and set new benchmarks for the industry.”

Before receiving this certification, Accor joined the ‘A-list’ of global environmental non-profit CDP in February this year.

This recognition reflects the company’s effort as part of its sustainability strategy.

Under this strategy, Accor looks to reach carbon neutrality by 2050, in line with the Paris Agreement and validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi).

The company also aims to cut its carbon emissions by 46% for Scope 1 and 2, as well as 28% for Scope 3 by 2030.

Accor was in the news last week for renewing partnership agreements for more than 40 hotels in Australia.
