A Days Inn hotel in Maine has been completely destroyed by a fierce fire. The blaze broke out on 17 May 2023, resulting in the loss of the entire building. As firefighters worked tirelessly to extinguish the flames, it was confirmed that at least one person remains unaccounted for.
Kittery Fire Chief David O’Brien expressed the magnitude of the destruction, stating that the hotel is now a “total loss,” with nothing left of the structure. The fire has entirely engulfed the $1.6 million establishment, leaving only ashes.
Efforts are now underway to discover the cause, but the intensity of the flames, the size of the building, the windy conditions and challenges in water supply have posed significant obstacles for the firefighters.
O’Brien reported that crews are still following up on reports of missing people. “At this point, we have one – possibly two – that are unaccounted for,” he said.
The hotel belonged to a franchisee not the corporation
Headquartered in New Jersey, the Days Inn hotel chain is a franchise business. The franchisee receives a comprehensive service and support programme which includes training and marketing assistance.
The franchise offers low-priced hotel services with free breakfast and Wi-Fi. The initial US franchise fee is $35,000 although other requirements must also be met by franchisees, including a net worth of at least $292,634.
