In response to recent strikes organised by union UNITE HERE Local 11, the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office has announced an investigation into labour practices at hotels across Los Angeles County.
The investigation aims to address concerns raised regarding the alleged employment of unhoused refugees, particularly from Venezuela, to replace striking workers, specifically in the housekeeping departments.
District Attorney George Gascón expressed deep concern about the allegations, stating: “We take these egregious allegations with the utmost seriousness. The mistreatment of vulnerable workers and their exploitation will not be tolerated.”
He emphasised the commitment to conducting a comprehensive investigation and working closely with UNITE HERE Local 11 and other stakeholders to ensure strict compliance with labour laws, as well to safeguard the rights and dignity of all workers.
Opposing the practice of exploitation
UNITE HERE Local 11 co-president Ada Briceño condemned the actions of the hotels and expressed gratitude for District Attorney Gascón’s leadership.
She said: “Thank you for District Attorney Gascón’s leadership on this issue. We will not stand by while that happens; our union is committed to continue fighting for all workers.”
