The Palace Hotel in Madrid, a historic establishment with a 112-year legacy, has undergone a comprehensive €90 million renovation to restore its original grandeur and integrate modern sophistication.
This extensive refurbishment has elevated the hotel to Marriott’s Luxury Collection, reflecting its renewed status in the luxury hospitality sector.
Architectural restoration and interior design
The renovation meticulously restored the hotel’s 1912 façade, unveiling floral ornaments and garlands that had been obscured for decades.
A significant highlight is the restoration of the iconic stained glass and iron dome, originally designed by Eduardo Ferrés i Puig, comprising 1,875 glass panes. Over 100 specialists collaborated to return this feature to its former splendour.
The interior redesign, led by the Lázaro Rosa-Violán studio, pays homage to illustrious past guests such as Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí. The 470 guestrooms and suites now feature hand-painted wallpapers inspired by El Retiro Park and bathroom mosaics depicting aerial views of the Royal Botanical Gardens.
Elements like marble fireplaces and mid-century style chandeliers contribute to a distinguished, residential ambiance.
Gastronomic offerings and cultural homage
Under the hotel’s restored dome lies La Cúpula, an all-day restaurant and cocktail bar that combines historical character with contemporary design. The menu offers dishes inspired by the hotel’s notable guests, blending legacy with creativity.
Additionally, the 27 Club bar, named in tribute to the Generation of ’27 poets who once frequented the establishment, offers a cocktail menu that reinterprets classics from the Pre-Prohibition and Prohibition eras with a modern twist.
Sustainability initiatives and local impact
The renovation emphasised sustainability, achieving a 14% reduction in carbon emissions in public spaces.
All suppliers hold environmental certifications, and 64% of the products used were manufactured in Spain. Energy-efficient solutions implemented are expected to reduce annual energy consumption by 26%.
The hotel’s reopening was marked by an event attended by Madrid’s mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, and the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, underscoring the establishment’s significance in the city’s tourism sector.
The Palace Hotel’s transformation aims to bolster Madrid’s position as a global luxury tourism destination, offering guests a blend of historical elegance and modern comfort.
