Millennium & Copthorne Hotels New Zealand has announced the acquisition of the Mayfair Hotel Christchurch from Mayfair Luxury Hotels and the Stapley family.
The hotel, which opened in 2022, is situated close to local attractions such as the Canterbury Museum and Hagley Park.
The acquisition marks the return of Millennium & Copthorne to earthquake-stricken Christchurch. In 2011, Millennium Copthorne’s hotels in the city were demolished due to an earthquake.
Valued at $31.9m plus GST [goods and services tax], the acquisition will be funded through Millennium & Copthorne’s existing cash resources and bank facilities. The transaction is expected to be finalised before the end of next month.
Following the completion, the hotel will undergo a rebranding to align with the Millennium & Copthorne portfolio, with further details to be revealed in the coming months.
The Mayfair Hotel features 67 guest rooms and suites and is a freehold property. In addition to its accommodation, the hotel offers a range of facilities including a cocktail bar, conference and meeting facilities, and a café and kitchen.

By GlobalDataMayfair Luxury Hotels directors’ spokesperson Glen Stapley said: “Our people have worked really hard to get the hotel on the map and become the 8th ranked hotel in New Zealand (Trip Advisor Best of the Best Awards 2024) and winning the Best Café in New Zealand at the 2024 Hospitality New Zealand’s Awards for Excellence are two of many highlights.
“The input and support of the hotel’s teams have been fantastic and thanks to them, they have contributed to the hotel’s accolades and excellent reputation.”
Millennium & Copthorne managing director Stuart Harrison said: “After over a decade, we are very happy to have a hotel presence in Christchurch once again.
“Christchurch has always been a strategically important market for us and the acquisition of this hotel comes at the right time as visitor numbers and interest in Christchurch are both increasing.”
