The Abu Dhabi hotel industry hosted 2,111,611 guests in 2011, beating its target of two million guests by 6.5%, according to the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA).
In December 2011, hotels and hotel apartments in the emirate received 207,723 guests, a 26% rise compared with the same month in 2010.
Domestic tourism accounted for 39% of 2011 bookings in Abu Dhabi hotels, with visitors from the Gulf Cooperation Council accounting for 45% of guests, while non-GCC Arab countries made up 11%. Tourists from European countries accounted for 18% of guests, followed by Asian travellers at 14%.
The ADTA estimated that occupancy levels in Abu Dhabi hotels last year touched 69%, overall revenues rose by 3% and room revenues increased by 2%. Guest nights were up by 22% to 6.3 million and the length of stay increased by 5%, but average room rates fell by 14%.
ADTA chairman Shaikh Sultan Bin Tahnoun Al Nahyan said that 2.3 million guests were initially targeted for 2012 but, in conjunction with stakeholders, the ADTA will reassess whether this target should be increased.
STR Global director of marketing and analysis Konstanze Auernheimer told Gulf News that the economic environment is becoming increasingly difficult in the source markets for Abu Dhabi, and the emirate might struggle in 2012 to meet the performance of the previous year.
