The health and wellness tourism industry in India is expected to generate revenues of INR315.4bn ($6.38bn) in 2016, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 25.6% over 2012-16, according to a BRICdata report.
A large number of health and wellness tourists are attracted to India due to the availability of low cost, advanced medical technology, qualified doctors, medical visas and various government initiatives.
The report observed that the industry, despite being smaller in size than developed countries, is developing rapidly on both a regional and national level.
In order to present India as a unique destination for spiritual healing, the Ministry of Tourism aims to capitalise on the potential of the country’s traditional systems of wellness and medicines such as ayurveda, siddha and yoga, the report noted.
