The historic Visitation Academy in Frederick, Maryland, US, has been renovated into the Visitation Hotel Frederick, a boutique hotel.

This Catholic boarding school was founded in 1846 and closed in 2016 but has now found new life as a modern hospitality destination.

The hotel has officially opened offering a modern boutique experience while honouring its past. The property, which is the first hotel in downtown Frederick in 50 years, combines the building’s grandeur with a minimalist design and features 65 intimate guest rooms.

This revitalisation project has been led by real estate developer Jim O’Hare and OTJ Architects CEO Lance Jaccard.

O’Hare said: “It’s a passion of mine to bring a new life to spaces that have contributed so much to the surrounding historic districts.

“The girls school and convent at Visitation played such a meaningful role in the history of downtown Frederick, and with our adaptive reuse, we hope that Visitation Hotel Frederick will be a huge part of Frederick’s future”.

The hotel’s dining experience is conceptualised by James Beard-nominated Bryan Voltaggio, in partnership with his brother, chef Michael Voltaggio.

It offers a full-service restaurant and bar, an all-day café, and full-scale catering and also includes a grand ballroom, a bridal suite, and multiple private event spaces suitable for weddings and business meetings.

Visitation Hotel is part of the Tribute Portfolio by Marriott Bonvoy and will be included in the Historical Hotels of America programme.

Adjacent to the hotel, the Visitation Frederick Condominiums offer premium living spaces, with seven more condos to be delivered next year. The hotel’s design features library-inspired lighting, leather detailing, and curated accessories while guest rooms offer a subdued, restful retreat.

Historic artefacts discovered during construction are displayed throughout the property, maintaining a connection to its past.

Bryan Voltaggio, a Frederick native, introduces Wye Oak Tavern and Acorn Provisions to the hotel, providing guests and locals with a unique dining experience.

The tavern’s design includes a church organ, stained glass windows, and artwork by Jenny Wilson, while the café offers a range of food and beverages.
