Accor is set to significantly expand its presence in Japan with the opening of 22 new hotels, adding more than 6,000 rooms to its portfolio.

The opening on 1 April 2024 will double Accor's footprint in the country, bringing the total number of properties to 46.

The new establishments include 12 Grand Mercure and 10 Mercure hotels.

They are strategically located from the northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido to the southernmost prefecture of Okinawa, and close to Asuka village in Nara, Cape Zanpa in Okinawa, Shiroi Koibito Park in Hokkaido and Senri Beach in Wakayama.

Accor said these hotels will offer a variety of amenities, including guestrooms, restaurants, and wellness facilities like onsen, saunas, and pools.

Grand Mercure Hotels & Resorts, Accor's premium brand, is making its debut in Japan, promising an authentic experience that honours local culture and traditions.

Positioned in the midscale segment, Mercure Hotels & Resorts focuses on revealing the hidden treasures of each location to its guests.

Among the notable new properties are the Grand Mercure Okinawa Cape Zanpa Resort and the Grand Mercure Wakayama Minabe Resort & Spa.

Accor Asia Premium, Midscale and Economy Division chief operating officer Garth Simmons said: “As Japan continues to welcome back international travel and experiences a steady recovery of the tourism industry, we are excited to add these great hotels to our portfolio and in doing so we are doubling our Group’s presence in Japan.

“As the desire to connect with local culture and nature is increasingly in demand amongst travellers today, we offer our loyal guests just that; a range of local experiences offered in charming coastal towns and amongst nature.

“Popular destinations such as Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto will always remain in high demand, however if you want to truly immerse yourself in the authentic culture of a country, sometimes you need to escape the big cities and head off the beaten path.”

Last month, Accor selected IDeaS, a hospitality revenue optimisation software developer, to provide global revenue management software (RMS) services.
