New Zealand-based Capstone Hotel Management has been appointed as the new management company for Portage Resort, according to a press release posted on Hospitality Net.

Effective this month, Capstone Hotels has begun handling reservations and trade inquiries for the Marlborough Sounds property, which was most recently renamed the Portage Hotel.

Capstone Hotel Management managing director Clare Davies said: "We are absolutely thrilled to be joining the owners of Portage Resort to commence an exciting new chapter for the property.

"We look forward to adding the Capstone touch and reintroducing the property and new leadership team to the international tourism sector and recementing its place in the hearts of locals and New Zealanders."

The company intends to host an open day on October 6 this year to interact with the local community and tourism operators and provide an update on the renovation plans for the property.

Portage Resort representative Letitia Morettini said: "We are delighted to have Portage Resort come under the management of locally based Capstone Hotel Management.

"Clare Davies and her team have a strong understanding of the top of the south region and in particular, the Marlborough Sounds, having worked with lodges in the area, including the management of Awaroa Lodge in the Abel Tasman National Park.

"Capstone has a strong understanding of the logistics and challenges of managing a remote property and the team is extremely committed to reinvigorating Portage back to its former glory."

Set up in the early 1900s, Portage Resort has developed over the last three decades into an international property.

Located in New Zealand, the resort overlooks Kenepuru Sound and is close to the Queen Charlotte Track.

It features 42 guestrooms and an outdoor pool, as well as a range of on-site activities and dining options, including the Portage Restaurant & Bar and Snapper Bar.

Capstone Hotel Management operates various properties across New Zealand, including luxury lodges, wilderness retreats and hotels in the Central Business District.

Demand for upscale and luxurious products has been rising steadily in the travel and tourism sector

The increased need for privacy, a greater focus on health and wellbeing, a desire to tick off ‘bucket list’ experiences, the tendency to take longer trips, the focus on eco-tourism, and an increase in millionaires means the theme of premiumization will continue to grow in importance. The travel industry will experience a surge in demand for higher-end and customized offerings as experiential consumption keeps growing. While premiumization attracts only a small number of global travelers, it is a valuable revenue stream for companies as it is unlikely to be impacted by external factors like economic downturns.
