Alterra Mountain Company, a premier mountain operating company, has announced the terrain expansion of Deer Valley Resort in the US state of Utah.

This expansion aims to add 3,700 acres of terrain to the ski-only resort situated in the Wasatch Mountains of Park City.

Additionally, a new village and portal will be developed in collaboration with Extell Development Company, a real estate developer.

This development will improve access to the resort and add lodging, dining and retail amenities.

The terrain extension will more than double the resort's skiable area and bring 16 new lifts and a new ten-passenger gondola.

A new snowmaking system will support the diverse terrain with precise snow grooming to meet Deer Valley's current standards.

Alterra Mountain Company president and CEO Jared Smith said: "Alterra Mountain Company is committed to investing in large-scale projects that will deliver differentiated experiences in incredible places and this project is exactly that.

"Deer Valley has long been a world-renowned resort and this project will offer guests more of what it has always been known for: legendary service, an exceptional ski-only experience and industry-leading culinary offerings."

The project will be completed over the next three seasons, with most of the new lifts and trails expected to open as early as the winter (December to March) season of 2025–2026.

Once the expansion is complete, Deer Valley will feature 5,726 acres of ski-only terrain across ten mountains.

The investment in Deer Valley is in addition to the $500m announced by Alterra earlier in 2023 to boost guest experiences across 17 resorts.

The resort’s new terrain and village will have a new entrance from a portal via US Route 40.

The village is expected to include 800 hotel rooms across several properties, close to 1,700 residential units, 68,000ft² of recreation centre and 250,000ft² of retail and commercial space.

This multi-faceted project aims to offer approximately 2,000 new work opportunities in Deer Valley.

Demand for upscale and luxurious products has been rising steadily in the travel and tourism sector

The increased need for privacy, a greater focus on health and wellbeing, a desire to tick off ‘bucket list’ experiences, the tendency to take longer trips, the focus on eco-tourism, and an increase in millionaires means the theme of premiumization will continue to grow in importance. The travel industry will experience a surge in demand for higher-end and customized offerings as experiential consumption keeps growing. While premiumization attracts only a small number of global travelers, it is a valuable revenue stream for companies as it is unlikely to be impacted by external factors like economic downturns.
