Greenwood Hotels and Resorts Group has unveiled its plans to invest Rs5bn ($60.50m) to develop hospitality projects in the northeast region of India over the next decade, reported PTI via ETHospitalityWorld.com.

The company also introduced a new property, called the Greenwood Guwahati, with an investment of Rs1bn.

Greenwood Hotels and Resorts Group managing director Himanshu Kalita stated: "Despite being a gateway to northeast India and a major trade centre, Guwahati lacks sufficient international level hospitality options for business and trade requirements. We are trying to address this need gap."

The new resort is expected to improve the hospitality infrastructure and promote economic growth in the entire northeastern region.

Located in the city of Guwahati in the northeastern state of Assam, the new property features 48 rooms.

Among the range of amenities provided at the property are the Kayana spa, a swimming pool and a gym.

It also features the Kiya jazz bar, Bagan karaoke, the Jholoe restaurant serving global cuisine, the Bagan patio café and the Sakahi terrace kitchen and lounge.

The property hosts social and business events in the Xorai banqueting space which spans 2,500ft² and accommodates up to 350 guests.

The group plans to add new properties to further expand its portfolio across the region.

It has not disclosed the overall number of hotels to be added or their exact locations.

Demand for upscale and luxurious products has been rising steadily in the travel and tourism sector

The increased need for privacy, a greater focus on health and wellbeing, a desire to tick off ‘bucket list’ experiences, the tendency to take longer trips, the focus on eco-tourism, and an increase in millionaires means the theme of premiumization will continue to grow in importance. The travel industry will experience a surge in demand for higher-end and customized offerings as experiential consumption keeps growing. While premiumization attracts only a small number of global travelers, it is a valuable revenue stream for companies as it is unlikely to be impacted by external factors like economic downturns.
