Hotel del Coronado (known as The Del), part of the Curio Collection by Hilton, has revealed plans for the final phase of a $160m restoration of its historic Victorian building, concluding Blackstone Real Estate’s $550m initiative for the National Historic Landmark property.

The iconic resort, located in the city of Coronado on San Diego Bay, California, US, aims to enhance guest experiences and preserve its rich legacy, with completion set for spring 2025.

Preserving heritage, elevating experience

Hotel Del Coronado general manager, Harold Rapoza, expressed excitement for this final chapter on Hilton's website, stating: "The Victorian building holds a special place in the hearts of our guests, and we are dedicated to preserving its historical significance while elevating the bespoke guest experience to new heights."

Blackstone’s Rob Harper affirmed the owner's commitment since 2018 to maintain The Del's status as a timeless destination, quoted in a press release as saying: “Since our more than $550m investment plan began in 2018, we have worked diligently to preserve The Del as a national historic landmark while cementing the property’s status as an iconic and timeless destination for generations to come.”

Designing a legacy

The Victorian building is the original beachfront hotel that was established in 1888.

Led by Wimberly Interiors and WATG’s California architecture studio, the building’s revamped design will blend original finishes with contemporary enhancements.

The Del’s transformation

Since 2018, The Del has undergone a transformation, introducing modern amenities and experiences.

In 2022, the hotel introduced Shore House, a new residential-style neighbourhood. Significant renovations have been carried out in the Cabanas and Views neighbourhoods, contributing a total of 314 new rooms.

The fitness facilities at The Del have expanded and now offer a variety of classes led by certified trainers. A comprehensive retail overhaul has introduced speciality shops catering to diverse tastes and preferences.

The Victorian building's entrance has undergone a complete transformation, re-orienting the guest arrival experience to echo the grandeur of the original Victorian lobby. At the same time, the Vista Terrace outdoor event venue was relaunched in 2019.

Serẽa Coastal Cuisine, a sustainable sea-to-table restaurant, also debuted in 2019. The resort's culinary scene then underwent further upgrades, touching multiple dining outlets such as the Sun Deck, Babcock & Story Bar, and ENO Market & Pizzeria.

To complete the rejuvenation, the Spa & Salon at The Del offers a completely re-imagined space, while the new cabana pool is heated year-round.

Gen Z and their impact on the travel and tourism industry

The medical devices industry is highly regulated and therefore can be slow to adopt new technologies to modernize. However, it is realizing the benefits that AI can bring, and AI is now being used in different areas across the entire value chain. Common use cases include data management, remote surgery, diagnostic and procedural AI assistants, and clinical trial design. GlobalData estimates that the AI in medical devices market is expected to grow at a CAGR of >29% by 2027.
