IHG Hotels & Resorts has further expanded its Luxury & Lifestyle portfolio in Portugal by opening Convent Square Lisbon, Vignette Collection.

Located in the district of Baixa, the hotel marks the sixth property to join IHG's collection brand.

It is also the second property in Europe for the Vignette Collection, which aims to have 100 properties within a decade.

IHG Hotels & Resorts Luxury & Lifestyle Brands vice-president Tom Rowntree stated: “We are delighted to see Convent Square Lisbon, Vignette Collection join IHG’s ever-expanding Luxury & Lifestyle portfolio. Vignette Collection is unique – each property one-of-a-kind, with a distinct outlook and story to tell.

“The collection is united by a shared vision to harness travel’s ability to benefit people, place, and planet, and together, offers thoughtful venturers the opportunity to make positive change through authentically storied experiences.”

The 121-room hotel is a restoration of the historic building, Convento de S Domingos, originally built in 1242 by King Sancho II.

The hotel now offers a fitness suite, a sauna and an indoor plunge pool which features views of the city's old architecture, including the São Domingos church.

Dining options include an open-air cloister, an all-day restaurant called Capitulo and a lounge offering live music and tapas.

Guests can visit famous attractions such as Avenida da Liberdade, Rossio Square, Terreiro do Paço and Chiado.

The loyalty programme, IHG One Rewards, offers Convent Square Lisbon, Vignette Collection, and other IHG hotel guests more opportunities to earn rewards.

The launch of Convent Square Lisbon, Vignette Collection follows the opening of Portuguese property Casa da Companhia in Porto.

Demand for upscale and luxurious products has been rising steadily in the travel and tourism sector

The increased need for privacy, a greater focus on health and wellbeing, a desire to tick off ‘bucket list’ experiences, the tendency to take longer trips, the focus on eco-tourism, and an increase in millionaires means the theme of premiumization will continue to grow in importance. The travel industry will experience a surge in demand for higher-end and customized offerings as experiential consumption keeps growing. While premiumization attracts only a small number of global travelers, it is a valuable revenue stream for companies as it is unlikely to be impacted by external factors like economic downturns.
