The InterContinental Phuket Resort has taken a significant step in sustainability by introducing the Oklin Food Waste Composter, a first for Phuket, Thailand.

This initiative is part of the resort's commitment to setting new standards in waste management and reducing its carbon footprint.

InterContinental Phuket Resort general manager Bjorn Courage said: "Addressing the environmental challenges facing Phuket is not just a responsibility but a mission for us at InterContinental Phuket Resort. By introducing the Oklin Food Waste Composter, we are taking a significant step towards reducing our carbon footprint and leading the way in sustainable waste management.

"Our big picture is to inspire all hotels and companies in Phuket to follow us, creating a ripple effect of sustainable initiatives that will benefit Phuket Island as a whole.

Over 64% of Thailand's landfills consist of food waste, contributing to methane emissions, a potent greenhouse gas.

The resort's adoption of this eco-friendly technology aims to mitigate these environmental concerns.

As a leading tourist destination, Phuket faces waste management challenges, and the resort recognises the need for innovative solutions.

The resort has a history of environmental initiatives, such as supporting the sea garbage-collecting catamaran, License To Clean 001, and local community projects like Proud Kamala.

The Oklin Food Waste Composter further demonstrates its dedication to sustainability. This composter can convert food waste into compost within 24 hours, reducing the resort's food waste by 80-90%.

Oklin Thailand director Nutthakarn Klovuthi Anun said: "We are honoured to partner with InterContinental Phuket Resort in their pioneering efforts to combat food waste and promote sustainability. Oklin envisions a future for Thailand where innovative solutions, like the Oklin Food Waste Composter, become integral to waste management across various industries."

The composter can process 125kg of waste daily, producing approximately 12kg of fertiliser, or 360kg monthly.

This fertiliser will be distributed to local entities, including the Local Aor Bor Tor, Kamala School, the resort's gardens, and farms.

The resort also supports local agriculture by buying back produce grown with the organic fertiliser, showcasing a full-circle approach to sustainability.

In addition to waste management, the resort has achieved LEED certification, highlighting its sustainable building practices.

It supports green energy with an EV charger station and has eliminated single-use plastics, reinforcing its commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

Last month, InterContinental Hotels & Resorts announced plans to open the InterContinental San Antonio Riverwalk in San Antonio, Texas this year.
