Loto-Québec has revealed plans for the development of a 200-room hotel on the site of the Casino de Montréal in Parc Jean-Drapeau, Canada.

The company will have full ownership of this hotel in Québec, which is expected to open within two to three years.

It intends to soon select a partner for the project.

The hotel will prioritise sustainability in construction and have a low-height design, which is said to blend in with its vicinity.

The company stated that calls for tenders to initiate the hotel design process will be announced shortly.

This project entails an investment of around C$150m and revenues from the project are expected to benefit the entire community of Québec.

It will join Loto-Québec's existing portfolio, which includes Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu and Hilton Lac-Leamy.

Loto-Québec president and CEO Jean-François Bergeron said: “The Casino de Montréal has been a landmark in this city for 30 years.

“We’re very proud to announce the construction of this hotel as it’ll move the casino to the top among the best entertainment destinations.”

Tourism minister and Lanaudière region minister Caroline Proulx said: “The Casino de Montréal is a major tourist attraction that welcomes several million visitors annually.

“Adding a hotel on the casino grounds will enhance its attractiveness and further increase Montréal’s visibility on the world stage. This is great news as this project aligns perfectly with one of our goals, which is to continue developing the hotel offer.”

However, this project has been opposed by Montreal city councillor Craig Sauver.

Sauver stated on his official Twitter handle that: “Parc Jean-Drapeau is a jewel that deserves to be developed further, but not by adding a luxury hotel.

“I cannot believe the city is going to let a hotel be built in the centre of a prestigious park.”
