Melco Resorts & Entertainment launches NORDAQ bottling solution

This initiative is part of Melco’s sustainability goal to replace SUP bottles with refillable glass bottles across all its locations.

Melco Resorts & Entertainment has launched the NORDAQ water purification and bottling solution at its global properties, including Macau, the Philippines and Cyprus.

The company claims to have become the first hotel hospitality group and integrated resort operator in the world to launch this solution across its global property portfolio.

This move is part of Melco’s aim to replace single-use plastic (SUP) bottles with refillable glass bottles across all its locations, in line with its sustainability strategy called "Rise to Go Above & Beyond".

The initiative made progress in 2022, with NORDAQ being installed in 43% of hotel rooms and three restaurant outlets in Manila and Macau.

This has resulted in the removal of almost 1.4 million SUP bottles from City of Dreams Manila as well as the company’s Macau hotels.

An estimated 14.8 million plastic bottles are expected to be eliminated annually at normalised business volumes once the installation is fully complete and becomes operational across all of Melco's hotels in Macau.

NORDAQ CEO Johanna Mattsson said: "NORDAQ is a sustainability company focusing on eliminating single-use plastic. To transport water over water is one of the most illogical things we can do. We automatically shrink our own source and make it harder to get clean water.

"NORDAQ provides, in my opinion, the world's most innovative and effective water solution for superior taste and less waste. We are proud and very happy about this joint journey together with Melco, which will be the world´s first integrated resort to launch NORDAQ water across its global resorts. Together, we continue to embrace sustainable practises."

Melco's newest resort, called City of Dreams Mediterranean, which opened on July 10 in Limassol, Cyprus, has also begun using the NORDAQ system.

Demand for upscale and luxurious products has been rising steadily in the travel and tourism sector

The increased need for privacy, a greater focus on health and wellbeing, a desire to tick off ‘bucket list’ experiences, the tendency to take longer trips, the focus on eco-tourism, and an increase in millionaires means the theme of premiumization will continue to grow in importance. The travel industry will experience a surge in demand for higher-end and customized offerings as experiential consumption keeps growing. While premiumization attracts only a small number of global travelers, it is a valuable revenue stream for companies as it is unlikely to be impacted by external factors like economic downturns.
