Russell Crowe, the renowned Hollywood star, is on the verge of acquiring one of Sydney's last classic corner pubs, the Shakespeare Hotel, located in Surry Hills.

Crowe, 59, expressed his deep affection for the pub during a recent visit, which holds sentimental value for him as he used to frequent it while performing at the nearby Belvoir Street Theatre in his early acting days.

During a recent visit, Crowe spent nearly two hours at the establishment, meeting with owner Margaret Hargreaves and her three daughters.

Crowe was keen to discuss the potential purchase, estimated to exceed A$12m, with all the members of the Hargreaves family involved in the business.

He meticulously inspected each of the pub's three floors, including boutique accommodation, a bistro and private dining rooms, and even ventured down into the cellar.

Preserving the 'family attitude'

In an emotional address to the Hargreaves family, Crowe emphasised his commitment to maintaining the "family attitude" for which the Shakespeare Hotel has long been known.

Affectionately referred to as the "Shakey", this iconic establishment, which opened its doors in 1879, is situated 300 metres from Central train station, en route to the Sydney Cricket Ground and the Allianz Stadium.

Over the years, it has been a gathering place for South Sydney rugby league club supporters, the AFL's Sydney Swans fans, a diverse array of Sydney's arts, business, sports and media figures, and the city's residents from various walks of life.

Crowe's interest in the historic landmark has garnered attention and sparked hopes among locals that he will preserve its cherished character.

Members of the Hargreaves family, who have owned it for 45 years, now seek a fresh perspective for the "Shakey", marking the end of an era for them.

A decade-long interest

This is not the first time Crowe has expressed interest in acquiring the Shakespeare Hotel; he initially explored the idea about a decade ago. The actor’s fondness for the pub's classic charm has been noted by patrons who applaud his appreciation for the "old-style stuff."

They hope that Crowe's potential ownership will reflect his desire for continuity in their beloved establishment, and won't lead to significant changes.

The Shakespeare Hotel, like many other pubs and clubs in Sydney, has faced challenges in recent years, including the disruption caused by the construction of Sydney's light rail system and extended closures during the Covid-19 pandemic.

But despite these setbacks, the business has rebounded, and with the resurgence of the city's nightlife, the Hargreaves family sees the time as right to pass the torch and explore new opportunities.

As Russell Crowe nears the purchase of this multimillion-dollar venue, locals are hopeful that he will stay true to his commitment to preserving the essence of the Shakespeare Hotel, ensuring that its historic charm remains intact for generations to come.
