Shrewsbury Prison, the historic UK landmark with 200 years of history, is being reimagined into a boutique hotel, combining a dark history with modern luxury.

The hotel will have 20 bedrooms, each of which will be designed to provide an immersive experience. According to the prison, the new design will respect the prison’s legacy by “blending rich heritage with modern luxury and sustainability.”

The new hotel will “honour the past”, according to CEO Joel Campbell, while also “redefining the visitor experience”.

The prison, which is also known as The Dana, was completed in 1793 and was the site of 63 executions between 1795 and 1961. Most of these were public hangings, with the last occurring in 1868. Eight non-public executions occurred between 1902 and 1961 before capital punishment was abolished in the UK.

Currently, Shrewsbury Prison hosts guided tours and a cell escape experience. Describing itself as “an immersive dark tourism attraction”, the venue also hosts group events including prison breaks and paranormal investigations.

It has been popular with visitors, leaving some X users reluctant to see the change.

Once it becomes a hotel, Shrewsbury Prison will generate some of its electricity using solar panels. The venue will house a conference facility, which will include training rooms, meeting rooms and an event space.

There will also be an on-site restaurant, capable of catering for 120 guests with a menu that celebrates local flavours and international cuisines. To receive the guests, there will be a car park with 72 spaces and charging points for electric vehicles.

Of the hotel’s future, Campbell said: “Transforming Shrewsbury Prison into a world-class destination represents a unique and thrilling venture for us. This project is not just about preserving a piece of history; it’s about redefining the visitor experience. I am excited to see how this development will not only honour the past but also pave the way for a new era of sustainable tourism.

“The creation of the boutique hotel, state-of-the-art conference facility, and exquisite dining venue, all while moving towards net zero, is a testament to our commitment to innovation and excellence. We eagerly anticipate welcoming guests from around the world to experience the unique charm and character of Shrewsbury.”
