CairoHouse Egypt has entered an agreement with Tourism Investment and Marriott International to transform the Tahrir Complex (Mogamma El-Tahrir) in downtown Cairo into an Autograph Collection Hotel.
The planned hotel will feature 500 guest rooms and serviced apartments, multiple dining and entertainment options, as well as amenities that include a rooftop swimming pool, fitness centre and spa.
A range of meeting and event venues will be available at the property for corporate gatherings and social functions.
This project is part of a broader initiative led by The Sovereign Fund of Egypt (TSFE) aimed at revitalising downtown Cairo.
The Tahrir Complex, which has housed government offices since its construction in 1951, has long been a central location for Egyptians conducting official business.
Following a decree by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in September 2020, the complex was decommissioned from its public service role, with ownership transferred to TSFE for redevelopment into a commercial and tourism-focused venue.
Marriott International North Africa development vice-president Shady Hassan said: “We have had a long-standing presence in Egypt, and we remain committed to further enhancing our portfolio in the country and supporting the growth of its tourism sector.
“Autograph Collection features curated properties that celebrate individuality and we look forward to working with the Consortium and The Sovereign Fund of Egypt to bring the brand’s distinct perspective on design and hospitality to the city.”
In August 2022, CairoHouse, a development consortium comprising Global Ventures Group, Oxford Capital Group, Al Otaiba Investments, and Zoser Capital Partners, secured the rights to the project, with an estimated investment of more than $200m.
Oxford Capital Group CEO John Rutledge said: “We are excited to have achieved this important milestone with our longtime friends and professional collaborators at Marriott International and look forward to advancing this iconic project in the historic city of Cairo.”
