At the Trip.com Group Envision 2024 Global Conference held in Shanghai on 30 May 2024, travel and technology experts gathered to discuss the future of tourism, particularly focusing on attractions and tours.
The conference, headed by travel service provider Trip.com, provided insights into changing traveller preferences, emphasising the demand for unique and personalised experiences.
According to Jim Ji, vice-president of the Trip.com Group and CEO of Attractions & Tours, there has been a significant surge in international travel, with a 34% increase in 2023 over the previous year.
Trends indicate that especially during key holiday periods, both outbound and domestic travel in China are on the rise. Ji noted the shift in traveller demographics and preferences, with younger generations favouring local and immersive experiences over traditional tourism activities.
Innovation through technology
The conference also highlighted the critical role of technology in reshaping the travel industry. Advanced tools such as AI are revolutionising the way travellers plan and experience their journeys.
Trip.com's own AI travel assistant, TripGenie, exemplifies how such technologies are becoming indispensable in providing efficient and personalised customer service.
Discussions at the event explored the application of dynamic pricing, instant booking confirmations and the use of AR (augmented reality) and VR (virtual reality) to create more engaging and immersive travel experiences.
Expansion and partnerships
Trip.com Attractions & Tours showcased its latest projects and partnerships, aimed at enriching the travel experience with unique offerings and services.
Notable initiatives include the introduction of VIP experiences and exclusive events such as Christmas Wonderland 2023 in Singapore, which has successfully drawn in a larger market share.
Strategic partnerships have been formed with global icons such as the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the Empire State Building, enhancing Trip.com's service offerings in these locations.
The company has expanded its pre-travel services, now providing eSIM capabilities across 160 countries and enhancing customer service at major international airports such as Changi and Hong Kong International.
These advancements underscore Trip.com’s commitment to improving the travel experience from the planning stages to the journey itself.
As the travel industry continues to evolve, Trip.com's latest conference has shed light on the significant trends and technological advancements that are shaping the future of tourism.
The focus on unique, technology-driven experiences reflects a broader shift in consumer expectations, which are increasingly centred on personalisation and immersion in local cultures.
