Hotels across the US are preparing for the annual spring break crowds at the end of March 2024.

Insurance and asset management provider Allianz has surveyed more than 3.4m travel itineraries to find out which destinations are in the most demand.

American travellers are favouring domestic travel for spring break, with 76% of the itineraries for domestic travel and 24% for international trips.

According to Allianz, 2024's spring travellers should be prepared for heavier crowds en route to Orlando in Florida, Phoenix in Arizona and Las Vegas, Nevada.

Cities and locations including California, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Meyers and Tampa in Florida, Los Angeles, Miami, New York and Salt Lake City in Utah are expected to welcome a large number of visitors.

Florida continues to wear the domestic destination crown, claiming five positions within the top 10 chart. The state is popular for hotel openings and renovations by major brands such as Hard Rock and Marriott.

For international travel, nine out of 10 getaways on the international roster were taken by warmer, tropical destinations with Mexico's Cancun and San Jose del Cabo top of the list.

After being excluded from 2023's top 10 roster, Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic is back in the charts in a strong third place. Other top ten destinations include Puerto Vallarta in Mexico, Montego Bay in Jamaica, Nassau in the Bahamas, Oranjestad in Aruba and Providenciales Island in the Turks and Caicos.

US travellers are spending an average of $4,681 on their spring break travels. This marks a 7.9% increase compared to the same period in 2023 ($4,339) and represents a major revenue opportunity for hotels.

Hotels must be prepared to welcome guests of all types over the spring break period, from young university students to families.
