The Shangri-La Hotel in Qingdao, China, has added a new 22-storey tower called the Valley Wing. The new tower partners with the existing City Wing at the hotel to provide additional facilities.
The Valley Wing has a lobby, restaurants and coffee shop, as well as a business centre, ballroom and exhibition space. The hotel already boasted 500 rooms, but the Valley Wing adds 196 rooms and suites, and 13 fully serviced apartments to the inventory.
The new $62m wing was opened in March 2008. Qingdao hosted the sailing events of the 2008 Olympics.
Shangri-La accommodation
The Shangri-La Qingdao hotel features 696 guestrooms, including a range of executive, deluxe, premier and presidential rooms and suites.
The Valley Wing has 178 Executive Rooms, 14 Valley Wing Executive Suites, three Valley Wing Premier Suites and a Presidential Suite.
The 324m² Valley Wing Presidential Suite features a master bedroom with a walk-in wardrobe and dressing area, a separate study area and a marble-floor bathroom with Jacuzzi and television. The bathrooms have marble floors and contain a bathtub and glass shower room with an LCD television.
The suites boast additional facilities such a fax / copier, on-call 24-hour butler service, floor-to-ceiling windows, a large walk-in wardrobe and dressing room, separate study, an exercise bike and a Jacuzzi.
All guests have exclusive use of the Valley Wing Lounge, which includes breakfast, Champagne and selected wines, butler service, free broadband and Wi-Fi internet access.
The rooms in the City Wing range from 37m² to 226m². They come with a bathroom and a writing desk. The 75m² executive suites feature a sitting room and a bathroom with a walk-in wardrobe.
The Shangri-La Hotel also offers serviced apartments including single-bed room, double-bed room and triple-bed room apartments. The apartments range in area from 108 to 216m² and are fully furnished with all privileged amenities.
Valley Wing facilities
The Valley Wing also has a 24-hour business centre, modern meeting facilities, a shopping arcade and a health club offering a 25m heated indoor swimming pool, a specialist spa with massage facilities, a sauna, steam room and ten private treatment rooms. Tennis courts and a weights and cardiovascular training area is also available.
Business guests are given complimentary computer use with internet in the lounge and use of a meeting room for two hours every day.
Ballroom and dining
The Shangri-La Hotel has two big ballrooms and 11 function rooms, which can be used for hosting conferences and other events.
The Valley Wing has one of the largest ballrooms in the city, the China Hall, which can accommodate 2,000 people and offers the latest audio visual technology.
There are two main restaurants: Cafe Yum, which seats 312 guests, is an all-day restaurant serving a wide ranging international buffet through open kitchens. The Da Vinci restaurant, which seats 86, offers Italian cuisine. A lounge also acts as a wine bar. Shang Palace, located in the City Wing, serves local cuisines.
The Q Bar is also located in the City Wing. In addition, the hotel has Pralines coffee shop, which serves chocolates and cake, and a lobby bar, which offers live entertainment.
The hotel’s Lobby Lounge provides evening entertainment and a range of beverages and cocktails.
Valley Wing contractors
The new Valley Wing was constructed as part of a hotel office block complex. The office / apartment tower is 38-storeys high and the hotel tower has 22 storeys. Two levels of basement parking serving the two towers.
The main building contractor for the development was WSP Asia. The insulation of the tower services was provided by Kingflex Insulation.
