At the end of 2004, Kuala Lumpur’s Sunway Lagoon Hotel underwent a MYR550m (US$124m) expansion with the development of four new facilities: the Pyramid Tower, the Villas, the Duplex and Resort Suites.
Prior to expansion, the resort accommodation consisted of the five-star, 441-room Sunway Lagoon Resort Hotel (opened in 1995). The newly developed resort now provides 1,270 rooms, making the Sunway Lagoon Resort Hotel the largest hotel development in the Malaysian capital.

EXISTING FACILITIES
The fully integrated resort offers accommodation, leisure facilities and convention and business amenities that are directly linked to the main resort hotel.
The Sunway Lagoon is an 800-acre site of tropical gardens featuring the resort hotel, the Sunway Pyramid Convention Center, the Sunway Lagoon Theme Park, the Extreme Park @ Sunway for motorised sports and the Sunway Medical Center. The Lagoon also features the Sunway Pyramid shopping and entertainment mall containing an indoor ice-skating rink, a 48-lane bowling alley, a ten-screen cinema and a food court.
The Sunway Lagoon Theme Park is a recreation of a sunken mining wasteland, spanning some 80 acres. A 50ft Sphinx guards the entrance of the pyramid-shaped shopping complex.
During 2003, the hotel achieved an average occupancy of 80% with an equal mix of corporate business and leisure visitors. The gross operating profits doubled during the previous four financial years. Investment to date in the complex has amounted to MYR450m (US$118.4m).
PYRAMID TOWER
The 31-storey, 549-room Pyramid Tower is located at the crossroads of the Klang Valley and the urban district of Shah Alam. The area is served by an extensive network of expressways and rapid rail systems and is 25 mins from Kuala Lumpur city centre and only 35 mins from the international airport.
The Pyramid Tower opened for business at the end of July 2004. The standard room size is 32m² and contains an oversized bed (7ft across), vanity area, day bed, 21in flat screen LCD television with satellite channel access, floor to ceiling windows and access to the resort’s extensive facilities.
The main hotel dining room is a 450-seat café, which serves an international buffet selection for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Pyramid Tower also has the Atrium Café Lounge and the Gourmet Shop, a delicatessen-type sandwich shop on the lobby level.
The Pyramid Tower features an indoor jogging track, tennis and squash courts, a fitness centre and the Mandara health spa. Other facilities include a fully integrated business convention centre and a 6,500-space car parking area (underground and outside).
THE VILLAS
The resort has also built 17 exclusive Asia-styled villas for MYR25m (opened in February 2004). The Villas were constructed from dark Balau wood and limestone in a contemporary Asian style and are enclosed behind a high stonewall.
The villas command uninterrupted views across the resort. Each villa is served by a 24-hour butler service and boasts state-of-the-art facilities.
Fifteen of the villas measure 102m² and have a spacious bedroom, a private terrace with an infinity edge plunge pool, a sunset patio and a fully equipped modern bathroom with an oversized bath or state-of-the-art electronic impulse water shower.
Entertainment facilities include a 20in LCD television with satellite access, a CD and DVD player and two IDD telephone lines.
Two exclusive villas, the Villa Embun and the Villa Bayu, complete the complex. These two units are larger at 172m² and 192m², respectively. All of the villas are exclusively for adults. The villa complex is served by a central lounge/reception and dining area called the Pavilion where guests
enjoy meals, drinks and additional leisure facilities.
THE DUPLEX
The Duplex opened in March 2004 and offers five-star customised service residence for long-term stays. The duplex consists of 14 units of two-storey townhouses designed to meet the accommodation needs of corporate guests looking for a long-term stay or for leisure travellers who require more space. The Duplex is fully furnished and includes all utilities, a maid service and full access to the Sunway Lagoon Resort. Each unit boasts a balcony that overlooks the lagoon.
RESORT SUITES
The five-star Resort Suites also opened in October 2004, offering 280 units of fully furnished service-suites in a selection of studio, one- and two-bedroom options. The hotel manages 146 of the units, with the remaining 134 privately owned.
The Resort Suites complex is located between floors 11–31 of the Pyramid Tower. Resort Suites provide corporate and leisure travellers with alternative accommodation options. Some of the suites are leased out for timeshare schemes.
CONTRACTORS
The developer for the project was Sunway City Berhad. The expansion was overseen by Allson International Hotels & Resorts.
The architect for the Sunway Lagoon Resort development was Jururancang (M) Sdn Bhd, with general construction carried out by Sunway Construction Bhd. The interior of the Pyramid Tower was designed by Davenport Campbell Consultancy (M) S/B and the internal contractor is Jalex S/B.
The Villas were designed by Sunway Design Sdn Bhd and ArchiCentre Sdn Bhd. The interiors were fitted out by TID Pte Ltd (Singapore). PT. Wijaya Tribwana International undertook the landscaping surrounding The Villas.
