Know Your Guest: KYC to Protect Travellers and Manage Risk
By AdriaScanWith over 1.4 billion international tourist arrivals per year, travel and tourism is one of the largest industries in the world.
The siren call of culture, heritage, weather, and exotic destinations has caused an inexorable rise in global travel bookings in an already hyper-competitive marketplace.
However, travel, tourism and hospitality are also amongst the most vulnerable industries to petty crime, serious and organized crime, terrorism and infectious diseases such as Covid-19.
This paper highlights the threat posed by those using false or stolen identification and how false documents have been used to facilitate acts of crime and terrorism at hotels. It also introduces ISO 31030, a new global benchmark for travel risk management standards due for publication in 2021. ISO 31030 provides travel risk management guidelines which advocate for objective and independent assessment of all aspects of travel risk including the safety and security of accommodation.
In the future, hotels will face more demands from corporate travel managers and security teams to provide objective evidence of standards. Depending on the profile of the client there may be requirements to demonstrate that adequate protections are in place to validate the identity of guests and staff at the hotel.
